YouTube chapters checker

YouTube Help sets three rules for chapters: the first timestamp is 00:00, there are at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Paste your description to see which rules pass, then copy a fixed list.

Check your chapters

Checks the last chapter. Use m:ss or h:mm:ss.

How YouTube’s chapter rules work

You add chapters in YouTube Studio by listing timestamps and titles in the video’s description. Each timestamp starts a chapter that runs until the next one.

  1. Rule 1

    The first timestamp is 00:00.

YouTube Help: “Make sure that the first timestamp you list starts with 00:00.”
  2. Rule 2

At least three timestamps, in ascending order.

YouTube Help: “Your video should have at least three timestamps listed in ascending order.”
  3. Rule 3

Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.

YouTube Help: “The minimum length for video chapters is 10 seconds.”

YouTube Help also says that chapters you add yourself override automatic chapters, and that if you don’t have access to chapters yet, you can apply for access to advanced features.

Why aren’t my chapters showing on YouTube?

Check the three rules on YouTube Help: the first timestamp starts with 00:00, there are at least three timestamps in ascending order, and every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. YouTube Help also says that if you don’t have access to chapters yet, you can apply for access to advanced features.

Should I write 0:00 or 00:00?

YouTube Help says the first timestamp you list should start with 00:00. This checker reads 0:00 and 00:00 as the same time, and the fixed list it gives you writes 00:00.

Do my own chapters replace automatic chapters?

Yes. YouTube Help says adding your own chapters in the description overrides automatic chapters.

How does the checker work out the last chapter’s length?

Each timestamp starts a chapter that runs until the next one, so the last chapter runs to the end of the video. Type the video length and the checker measures the last chapter too.

Is my description sent anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser. Nothing you paste leaves this page.
